The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that conditions are favorable for the onset of the Southwest Monsoon over Kerala today, May 30, 2024. The Northern Limit of Monsoon currently passes through several key points, indicating its gradual advancement.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted for Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from May 29 to May 31. The monsoon is also expected to advance further into parts of the South Arabian Sea, Maldives, Lakshadweep, the Bay of Bengal, and Northeastern states.
A cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam will bring widespread rainfall with thunderstorms to Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim. Additionally, isolated heavy rainfall is expected in these areas over the next five days.
Scattered light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, is forecasted for Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, and Odisha. Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands will also experience significant rainfall due to strong westerly winds.
Meanwhile, a western disturbance will bring isolated rainfall to Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad. Dust storms are likely in Rajasthan from May 31 to June 3.
Heatwave conditions persist in parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, West Rajasthan, and other regions, with temperatures exceeding 42°C. These conditions are expected to gradually reduce after June 1.
