IMD Issues Weather Alerts: Heavy Rainfall and Heatwave Conditions Expected Across India

India – The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple weather alerts, indicating the continuation and advancement of the Northern Limit of Monsoon and predicting significant weather events across various regions of the country.

The Northern Limit of Monsoon continues to pass through key coordinates and locations, including Ratnagiri, Solapur, Medak, Bhadrachalam, Vizianagaram, and Islampur. Favorable conditions for further monsoon advancement are expected to bring heavy rainfall to parts of the central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra (including Mumbai), Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, south Chhattisgarh, south Odisha, and the Northwest Bay of Bengal over the next 3-4 days.

Rainfall Alerts:

  • Interior North Karnataka: An orange alert is in effect for heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy (115.5-204.4 mm) rainfall from June 7th to 10th.
  • Northeast India: Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds are likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim for the next seven days. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in these regions during specific periods.
  • Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala & Mahe: Widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms is anticipated, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Konkan & Goa and Madhya Maharashtra on June 10th and 11th.

Heatwave Alerts:

  • Uttar Pradesh: Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely from June 8th to 11th.
  • Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, Punjab, Haryana: Heatwave conditions in isolated pockets from June 8th to 11th.
  • Delhi and Surrounding Regions: Maximum temperatures in the range of 43-46°C, above normal by 2-4°C.

Weather Systems:

  • A cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam and south Telangana, and a shear zone along 16°N, are influencing weather patterns.
  • Western Disturbance over northwest India is expected to cause light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Rajasthan.
