Intensified Mission Indradhanush, often abbreviated as IMI, has emerged as a vital initiative under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, working relentlessly to ensure that routine immunization services reach every child and pregnant woman across India. As the 5th iteration of this campaign is poised to conclude on October 14, 2023, let’s explore the campaign’s core objectives and the milestones it aims to achieve.
Extending the Reach: Covering All Districts and Age Groups
This year marks a significant expansion of the IMI campaign. For the first time, it is being conducted across all districts in the country, enhancing its reach to the remotest corners of India. Another notable change is the age group being targeted. Previous campaigns covered children up to 2 years of age, but IMI 5.0 now includes children up to 5 years. This expansion ensures that a broader spectrum of the population receives essential vaccinations.
Focusing on Immunization Coverage and Disease Elimination
IMI 5.0 is primarily aimed at improving immunization coverage for all vaccines provided under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) as per the National Immunization Schedule (NIS). Special emphasis is being placed on enhancing Measles and Rubella vaccination coverage, with the ambitious goal of eliminating Measles and Rubella by 2023.
Leveraging Technology: U-WIN Digital Platform
In a step towards modernization, the campaign has introduced the use of the U-WIN digital platform for Routine Immunization in a pilot mode across all districts in the country. This technological integration helps streamline data management and ensures a more efficient immunization process.
Three Rounds of IMI 5.0 Campaign
IMI 5.0 unfolds in three rounds, spanning August and September, with the final round concluding on October 14, 2023. Each month, there is a six-day focus on immunization, which includes a designated Routine Immunization Day.
State-Wise Progress
As of September 30, 2023, the campaign has already made substantial strides. Over 34,69,705 children and 6,55,480 pregnant women have received vaccine doses during the first two rounds of IMI 5.0. This progress exemplifies the campaign’s dedication to reaching and immunizing a significant portion of the population.
The IMI 5.0 campaign represents a vital step towards bolstering India’s immunization efforts and ensuring a healthier future for the nation. With its extended scope and robust goals, it is poised to make a considerable impact on public health in the coming years.
