Impending Cyclone Michaung Threatens Tamil Nadu with Heavy Rainfall

Cyclone Michaung: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised an orange alert for Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh as Cyclone Michaung intensifies. The depression over the Bay of Bengal is set to transform into a cyclonic storm, with an anticipated landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam on December 5, bringing sustained wind speeds of 80-90 kmph and gusts up to 100 kmph.

The weather agency, monitoring a low-pressure area near the southeast Bay of Bengal, has issued a rain warning for Sunday and Monday, signaling the potential for substantial rainfall in the region. The depression, currently situated around 500 km east-southeast of Puducherry, is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the southwest Bay of Bengal by today.

According to the IMD, the cyclonic storm is projected to move northwestwards, reaching the south Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu coasts by December 4 forenoon. The areas likely to be affected include those off the coasts of south Andhra Pradesh and predominantly the north Tamil Nadu region.

As the cyclone advances, it is anticipated to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam during the forenoon of December 5. The IMD warns of maximum sustained wind speeds ranging from 80-90 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 100 kmph.

The national meteorological agency has issued an urgent wind warning over the southeast Bay of Bengal, reporting squally weather with wind speeds ranging from 45-55 kmph, surging up to 65 kmph. While these wind conditions are expected to decrease over the next 24 hours, hills and coasts along southern and eastern Indian states, including Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha, are bracing for moderate to heavy downpours triggered by the impending climatic system.
