Inauguration of Surat Airport’s Modern Terminal Building by PM Narendra Modi

Today, the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, officially opened the doors to Surat Airport’s new terminal building in Gujarat. Accompanied by the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Bhupendra Patel, the Prime Minister took a comprehensive walkthrough of the state-of-the-art facility.

Prime Minister Modi shared his excitement on X, stating, “The new integrated terminal building in Surat marks a significant leap in the city’s infrastructure development. This state-of-the-art facility will not only enhance the travel experience but also boost economic growth, tourism, and connectivity.”

Background:

The terminal building is designed to accommodate 1200 domestic passengers and 600 international passengers during peak hours, with provisions to increase the peak hour capacity to 3000 passengers and an annual handling capacity reaching 55 lakh passengers. Serving as the gateway to Surat City, the terminal’s architecture is inspired by local culture and heritage, reflecting the essence both in its interior and exterior. The façade showcases the rich and traditional woodwork of the old houses in the ‘Rander’ region of Surat City, enhancing the overall passenger experience.

The New Terminal Building adheres to GRIHA IV sustainability standards and incorporates various eco-friendly features. These include a double-insulated roofing system, energy-saving canopies, low heat gain double glazing units, rainwater harvesting, a water treatment plant, a sewage treatment plant, and the use of recycled water for landscaping. Additionally, the airport boasts a solar power plant, aligning with environmentally conscious practices.

The inauguration ceremony witnessed the presence of key dignitaries, with the Chief Minister of Gujarat joining Prime Minister Modi in celebrating the achievement that marks not only a milestone in Surat’s aviation infrastructure but also a testament to the city’s commitment to sustainable and culturally rich development.
