Ahead of the June 4 counting day for the Lok Sabha Elections 2024, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Monday that India set a world record with 642 million voters participating in the general elections. A remarkable 312 million women also participated in the voting process during the seven-phase elections.
Addressing a press conference, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar highlighted the significance of this achievement. “We have created a world-unique record of 642 million proud Indian voters. This is a historic moment for all of us. To give you some context, this is 1.5 times the number of voters in all G7 countries—US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Canada—combined,” he said.
CEC Kumar emphasized that the comparison was based on the number of voters, not electors and that India’s voter turnout was 2.5 times that of the 27 countries in the European Union. “There are 312 million women voters, marking the highest number ever recorded globally. This surpasses both the total and the women voter turnout of the 2019 elections. We must cherish this,” he added.
In conjunction with this announcement, the ECI extended a standing ovation to all voters who participated in the Lok Sabha polls, celebrating this extraordinary demonstration of democratic engagement.
