The Government of India and the World Bank have sealed a landmark agreement for the Green National Highway Corridors Project (GNHCP), which will construct 781 km of eco-friendly highways across Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh. With a total project cost of USD 1.29 billion, the World Bank is providing USD 500 million in loan assistance.
Project Overview
The GNHCP aims to create a network of green highways, showcasing climate resilience and sustainable construction practices. Scheduled for completion by May 2026, the project incorporates advanced green technologies and bio-engineering solutions.
Sustainable Practices
Key aspects of the project include the use of cement-treated sub-base and reclaimed asphalt pavement, promoting local materials like lime, fly ash, and waste plastic, and implementing bio-engineering measures for slope protection. Techniques such as coco fiber blankets, hydroseeding, and bamboo plantation will enhance environmental sustainability.
Environmental Impact
The green technologies and bio-engineering solutions are designed to reduce carbon emissions and conserve natural resources throughout the project’s life cycle. This initiative is expected to mitigate environmental impact and promote sustainable infrastructure development.
Socio-Economic Benefits
The project will improve connectivity to remote areas, boosting employment opportunities and fostering socio-economic development. By enhancing trade routes and ensuring all-weather roads, the GNHCP will facilitate inclusive growth and integration of underserved regions into the mainstream economy.
