India Announces National Science, Technology, and Innovation Awards

The Government of India has taken a significant step towards acknowledging excellence in the realms of Science, Technology, and Innovation with the introduction of the “Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar” (RVP). This National Award aims to celebrate and inspire outstanding contributions from researchers, technologists, and innovators across diverse fields.

Nominations and applications are invited for individuals or teams showcasing exceptional achievements in Science, Technology, and technology-led innovation. The awards are categorized into four segments, highlighting different aspects of contributions to the scientific landscape:

  1. Vigyan Ratna (VR): Recognizing lifetime achievements and contributions in specific fields of Science and Technology, a maximum of three awards will be presented.
  2. Vigyan Shri (VS): Distinguished contributions in designated fields of Science and Technology will be acknowledged with a maximum of 25 awards.
  3. Vigyan Yuva: Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (VY-SSB) Award: Encouraging young scientists who have made exceptional contributions, a maximum of 25 awards will be presented.
  4. Vigyan Team (VT) Award: Recognizing exceptional teamwork in Science and Technology, a maximum of three awards will be given to teams comprising three or more scientists, researchers, or innovators.

The RVP covers a broad spectrum of domains, including Physics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Mathematics & Computer Science, Earth Science, Medicine, Engineering Sciences, Agricultural Science, Environmental Science, Technology & Innovation, Atomic Energy, Space Science and Technology, and Others.

Nominations for these awards can be submitted on the Award Portal of the Ministry of Home Affairs (https://awards.gov.in/) from January 14, 2024, to February 28, 2024. General guidelines and detailed information about the RVP are available on the awards portal. This year, the coordination of the awards falls under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), operating under the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The much-anticipated announcement of the awards is scheduled for May 11, 2024, coinciding with National Technology Day, while the grand Award Ceremony for all categories is set to take place on August 23, 2024, in honor of National Space Day. This initiative underscores India’s commitment to fostering innovation and scientific excellence across diverse domains, paving the way for groundbreaking advancements in the country.
