India beat Indonesia 3-0 to win Thomas Cup for the first time ever

India has created history, beating 14-time-winners Indonesia. India’s first-ever Thomas Cup. The Thomas Cup 2022 was the championship’s 73rd edition, and it was held in Thailand. In Bangkok on Sunday May 15 2022, India’s badminton team won their Thomas Cup, defeating Indonesia 3-0 in the final. India has now become the 6th country to win the esteemed title.

The Thomas Cup called the World Men’s Team Crowns is an international badminton competition among brigades representing member nations of the Badminton World Federation, the sport’s global governing body. The Championship has been conducted every two times since 1982, amended from being conducted every three times since the first event held in 1948 – 1949. (Wikipedia)

Historic achievement for India, How did it happen?

India’s path to getting Thomas Cup titleholders wasn’t going to be easy. In their first- ever final, they were against the most successful team in the tournament’s history. Indian men had preliminarily reached the Thomas Cup semis in 1952, 1955, and 1979 while Indonesia is the most successful nation in the history of the event.

India was out to a perfect begin as Lakshya Sen defeated Anthony Ginting by 8-21, 21-17, 21-16 in a thrilling tie. India’s doubles set Satwik and Chirag defeated Ahsan-Sukamuljo 18-21, 23-21, 21-19, the most sensational achievement of their career, to give India a 2-0 lead.

In the third match, Kidambi Srikanth beat Jonatan Christie 21-15, 23-21 to make it 3-0. They have achieved it without losing a match in the final.

Victories from Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth and the brace of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy marshaled  India to the momentous achievement.

Prize Money

Both singles and doubles winners will get the prize money of a total pool of $1 million for the tournament. Moreover, India’s sports minister Anurag Thakur awarded a financial prize of INR 1 crore to the team. PM interacted on phone with champions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called up the Indian men’s badminton team to win the country’s first ever gold medal at the Thomas Cup and congratulated them for scripting history. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted,” The Indian badminton team has scripted history! The entire nation is elated by India winning the Thomas Cup!

The PM also mentioned of the fact the Indian team won the final without dropping a single match and He said it made the win even more Spectacular.

The Prime Minister also conveyed his regards and appreciation for the parents of the players as it is a difficult task to encourage children for sports and stay with them till the end.

Sports fraternity also sent words on sunday of praise and gave congratulations to the Indian badminton team for winning the first-ever Thomas Cup trophy in Thailand.
