Amidst the threat posed by Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Remal’, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) demonstrated commendable synergy with Central and State agencies, showcasing its capability to effectively deal with such natural disasters.
Originating as a low-pressure area on May 22, the cyclonic storm rapidly intensified into a severe cyclonic storm before making landfall on the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh on the intervening night of May 26-27.
The Headquarters of Coast Guard Region (North-East) swiftly launched pre-emptive measures and ensured seamless coordination with various central and state agencies. This proactive approach led to the effective management of the situation, preventing any loss of life or property at sea.
In anticipation of the cyclone’s arrival, the Indian Coast Guard deployed ships, aircraft, and shore-based surveillance systems for proactive surveillance and strategic diversion of the entire merchant fleet from the storm’s path. Timely alerts were broadcast from ICG’s Remote Operating Stations at Haldia and Paradip, warning fishing boats and transiting merchant vessels to steer clear of danger.
Following the cyclone’s landfall, ICG Ship Varad promptly sailed from Paradip to conduct a post-cyclone assessment, ensuring a swift response and evaluation of the situation. Additionally, two ICG Dornier aircraft took off from Bhubaneswar and carried out comprehensive surveillance in the North Bay of Bengal to assess the impact and extend assistance as needed.
The Indian Coast Guard’s proactive and coordinated efforts throughout the crisis underscore its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of maritime activities and coastal communities. By leveraging its resources and expertise, the ICG effectively mitigated the impact of Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Remal’, exemplifying its role as a reliable guardian of India’s maritime interests.
