The Indian Navy marked a significant milestone on March 28, 2024, with the delivery of the ‘Ammunition Cum Torpedo Cum Missile Barge, LSAM 18’, a crucial component of the 11x ACTCM Barge Project. Constructed by the MSME Shipyard, M/s Suryadipta Projects Pvt Ltd, Thane, the delivery ceremony took place at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai, destined for NAD(Karanja). The induction ceremony was honored with the presence of Cmde Vikram Bora, ND(Mbi)/ GM(Tech).
The genesis of this achievement traces back to the contract signed between the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and M/s Suryadipta Projects Pvt Ltd, Thane, on March 5, 2021. These barges, crafted meticulously under the aegis of Indian Naval Rules and Regulations of the Indian Register of Shipping, stand as proud testaments to indigenous design and manufacturing prowess. Notably, the rigorous model testing of the barge during the design phase was conducted at the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory, Visakhapatnam.
The induction of these barges heralds a new era in the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy. Designed to facilitate the transportation, embarkation, and disembarkation of crucial articles and ammunition to IN ships, both alongside jetties and at outer harbors, these barges serve as vital assets in fulfilling operational commitments. More than mere vessels, they represent the spirit of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, embodying the nation’s commitment to self-reliance and innovation in defense manufacturing.
As the LSAM 18 joins the fleet, it symbolizes not just the delivery of a barge but a reinforcement of India’s maritime strength and strategic vision. With each barge, the Indian Navy fortifies its position as a formidable maritime force, safeguarding the nation’s interests with indigenous solutions and unwavering determination.
