Indian Railways Achieves New Milestones with Record Budget and Safety Enhancements

In the Union Budget 2024-25, Indian Railways received a historic capital expenditure allocation of ₹2,62,200 crores, with Gross Budgetary Support increasing to ₹2,52,200 crores. This substantial rise from previous years underscores the government’s commitment to modernizing the rail network and boosting infrastructure.

Indian Railway: Milestones and Achievements

Indian Railways reported a record freight loading of 1,588 million tonnes (MT) for FY 2023-24, aiming for 3,000 MT by 2030. The total receipts reached ₹2,56,093 crores, and the net revenue was ₹3,260 crores. Track laying accelerated to 14.54 kilometers per day, and 41,655 Route Kilometers were electrified in the past decade.

Safety Enhancements

Significant safety measures include the introduction of the Rashtriya Rail Sanraksha Kosh (RRSK) and advanced technologies like Kavach, a safety system for automatic train protection. Other initiatives involve installing CCTV cameras, electronic interlocking systems, and axle counters to reduce human error and enhance operational safety.

Modernization and Upgradation

The Indian Railways is upgrading its infrastructure with new technology such as high-capacity locomotives, modernized coaching stock like Vande Bharat trains, and improved wagon designs. Station developments aim to enhance amenities while signaling systems are being modernized with Kavach and electronic interlocking to ensure safety and efficiency.
