On the 26th of December, Indian Railways pays tribute on the anniversary of the birth of Sardar Udham Singh, the freedom fighter and great revolutionary martyr who came to England to avenge the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The Sunam Udham Singh Wala railway station in Punjab is dedicated to the memory of his martyrdom.

About Sardar Udham Singh:-

Best known for assassinating Michael O’Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of Punjab in India, on 13 March 1940, Udham Singh was an Indian revolutionary belonging to the Ghadar Party and HSRA. The assassination was done in revenge for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar(Punjab) in the year 1919 for which O’Dwyer was responsible.

In July 1940, Singh was tried and convicted of murder and hanged. He used the name Ram Mohammad Singh Azad while in custody, which represents the three major religions in India, and his anti-colonial sentiment. Singh was a well-known figure in the Indian independence movement. He is commonly known as Shaheed-i-Azam Sardar Udham Singh. The Mayawati government paid homage to him in October 1995 by naming a district (Udham Singh Nagar) of Uttarakhand after him.
