Indian Railways Surpasses 90% Electrification Milestone, Accelerating ‘Zero Carbon Emission’ Mission

The Indian Railways (IR) is making significant strides towards its net zero emissions goal by completing over 90% electrification of its broad gauge routes (BGR). With 59,096 route kilometers (RKM) out of the total 65,350 RKM already electrified by the end of June, the national transporter is well on its way to achieving a greener and more sustainable rail network.

Moving Closer to Net Zero Emissions

The electrification of Indian Railways’ broad gauge routes is a crucial step towards reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and moving closer to the net zero emissions goal. With 90.43% of the total broad gauge routes already electrified, the railway network is significantly decreasing its reliance on fossil fuels and saving foreign exchange spent on oil imports. This transition to electric traction not only contributes to India’s net zero emissions target by 2070 but also aligns with Indian Railways’ aim to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Progress and Achievements

By the end of the last financial year (2022-23), 100% electrification was achieved in 14 out of the 32 states and union territories across the country. These states include Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Telangana, and more. In the remaining states, progress ranged over 90% of their respective total broad routes. Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Kerala witnessed significant advancements in electrification. Gujarat and Punjab are making steady progress at 88.94% and 85.0%, respectively. Rajasthan, Goa, and Karnataka are also moving forward, with progress ranging between 70% and 80%. However, Assam is experiencing slower progress, with only 31.81% of the work completed.

Rail Zones and Electrification

Out of the 18 Railway Zones, 10 have already achieved full electrification, further reinforcing the commitment of Indian Railways towards a greener future. Five zones have made substantial progress, ranging between 92% and 98% completion. These accomplishments highlight the dedication and efforts put forth by the Indian Railways in transforming the rail network into the largest green railway system globally.
