India’s Weather Update: Cyclonic Circulations, Dense Fog, and Rainfall Prediction

As the first weeks of January 2024 draw to a close, India is set to experience several extreme weather events, creating a complex and dynamic atmospheric environment. From cyclonic circulation to troughs and western disturbances, the subcontinent is braced for a range of weather changes.

Cyclonic Circulation Over Lakshadweep and Trough to North Konkan:

A cyclonic circulation has formed over the Lakshadweep area, accompanied by a trough extending to North Konkan in the lower tropospheric levels. This system is likely to influence the weather in the respective regions, warranting attention and preparedness.

Western Disturbance in Northwest Uttar Pradesh and Induced Cyclonic Circulation:

Another significant weather system is a Western Disturbance, functioning as a cyclonic circulation over northwest Uttar Pradesh. This disturbance induces a cyclonic circulation over northeast Rajasthan and neighboring areas in the lower tropospheric levels, adding to the atmospheric complexity.

Troughs Affecting Gujarat, Sri Lanka, and the Bay of Bengal:

Troughs play a crucial role in shaping weather patterns, and currently, one extends from South Gujarat to the cyclonic circulation over northeast Rajasthan. Additionally, another trough runs from South Sri Lanka to the Southwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal in the lower tropospheric levels.

Upcoming Western Disturbance and Its Impact:

Looking ahead, a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to affect Northwest India starting from January 8, 2024. This system could bring further changes in temperature and precipitation patterns.

Dense Fog and Cold Day Warning:

Several regions are under the influence of dense to very dense fog conditions. Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, and East Rajasthan are likely to experience these conditions during the night and morning of January 6-7. West Uttar Pradesh, West Rajasthan, and East Uttar Pradesh, among others, are also expected to witness dense fog at various intervals in the coming days.

Cold Wave and Severe Cold Day Conditions:

Cold wave conditions are anticipated in isolated pockets over Rajasthan on January 6, while cold day to severe cold day conditions are likely over Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi on January 6-7. Isolated pockets in Rajasthan may continue to experience these conditions on January 6, 2024.

Temperature Forecast and Cold Wave Warning:

The minimum temperatures over North India are expected to remain relatively stable in the next five days. However, isolated pockets in Rajasthan may experience cold wave conditions on January 6.

Rainfall Forecast:

Various regions are expected to witness rainfall in the coming days. Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Lakshadweep are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall, while heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is predicted for Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and south Coastal Andhra Pradesh on specific dates.

Staying informed about these intricate weather patterns is crucial for residents and authorities alike. Whether preparing for dense fog, cold wave conditions, or anticipating rainfall, being weather-aware is the key to minimizing the impact of these natural phenomena. Keep an eye on updates as India navigates through the atmospheric complexities in the days to come.
