International actor Kabir Bedi recently received the prestigious “Order of Merit of the Italian Republic,” the highest civilian award in Italy, at a private ceremony overlooking the iconic Gateway of India in Mumbai. Kabir Bedi took to Twitter to share the exciting news, expressing his gratitude for being recognized with one of Italy’s most esteemed decorations.
In his tweet, Kabir Bedi wrote, ”AWARDED one of Italy’s highest decorations, The Order of Merit! At a private ceremony overlooking the Gateway of India in Mumbai, I was awarded the “Order of Merit of the Italian Republic” (Merito della Repubblica Italiana), the most prestigious Italian civilian award. It was a very emotional award for me. Being presented the Order of Merit, Italy’s highest honor, is the fulfillment of my life’s work in Italy. It’s even higher than Cavaliere, which they made me twelve years ago. This double honor was a goose-bumps moment for me.”
Kabir Bedi reminisced about the significant role Italy played in his life, especially in the genesis of his journey as Sandokan, which began at the iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, merely one hundred meters from the ceremony venue. He described the occasion as a moment where life had come full circle.
The Scroll of Honour, signed by President Mattarella and counter-signed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, was read aloud by Consul General Alessandro de Masi, who emphasized Kabir Bedi’s extraordinary contribution to fostering better relations between India and Italy. The Ambassador of Italy, Vincenzo De Luca, acknowledged Kabir Bedi as not only a great promoter and admirer of Italy but also a sincere friend with a passionate dedication to the country.
Kabir Bedi expressed his joy in witnessing the camaraderie between Prime Ministers Meloni and Modi, symbolized by the hashtag #Melodi on the internet. He noted that Indo-Italian relations have never been better, marking a moment of pride and celebration for the actor and the enduring ties between the two nations.
