Starting August 1, Karnataka will enforce stricter speed limits, registering FIRs against drivers exceeding 130 kmph. This move aims to address the rising incidents of rash and dangerous driving. The rule will apply across all roads in the state, not just highways, marking a significant shift in traffic enforcement.
Karnataka: Data-Driven Decision
Additional Director General of Police (Traffic and Road Safety) Alok Kumar highlighted that speeding contributes to about 90 percent of fatal accidents in Karnataka. On July 25, 155 drivers were caught exceeding 130 kmph on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway. This data underscores the urgent need for stricter measures.
High-Speed Incidents and Supreme Court Involvement
Kumar recounted a recent fatal accident on a Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprise road where a vehicle was driven at 160 kmph, resulting in three deaths. The Supreme Court monitoring committee noted the prevalence of overspeeding and urged the state to enhance enforcement to curb speed-related fatalities.
Enforcement and Technology
The new regulation will utilize advanced technology for enforcement. Speed laser guns and Automatic Number Plate Recognition Cameras installed on major highways will aid in capturing violations. While daytime enforcement is manageable, night-time operations pose challenges. Despite these hurdles, Karnataka is committed to implementing this rule to improve road safety.
