Luka Modrić is a professional Croatian footballer who plays as a midfielder for La Liga club Real Madrid and is the captain of the Croatia national team. He usually plays as a central midfielder, but he can also play as an attacking midfielder or a defensive midfielder.
He is the greatest Croatian footballer ever and is widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of his generation. The Croatian War of Independence displaced Modrić’s family during his childhood. After showing promise with his hometown club NK Zadar’s youth team, in 2002 he was signed by Dinamo Zagreb at age 16.
In March 2006, Modrić made his international debut for Croatia against Argentina. In a friendly match against Italy, he scored his first international goal. Luka Modrić has participated in every important tournament for which Croatia has qualified, including the UEFA European Championship in 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020, as well as the FIFA World Cup in 2018, 2014, and 2006. He was selected for the Team of the Tournament at Euro 2008, only the second Croatian to ever achieve this honor.
Early life:-
Luka Modric was born on September 9, 1985, in Zaton Obrovacki, Croatia. He was raised in the hamlet of Modric, which is part of the village situated on the southern slopes of the mountain Velebit, north of the city of Zadar. At the time, Croatia was a republic within SFR Yugoslavia. Stipe Modrić from Modrići, and Radojka Dopuđ from Kruševo near Obrovac, both of whom initially worked in a knitwear factory, had the oldest child.
Modrić spent most of his early years living in his grandfather’s stone house on the road above the hamlet of Modrići after being named after his paternal grandfather. Tending to the goats was his main occupation during this time. He and his family were forced to flee the area when he was a child due to the Croatian War of Independence in 1991.
In December 1991, near his house in Modrići, Serb rebels who were part of the police of SAO Krajina executed Modrić’s grandfather Luka. After the family fled, the house was burned to the ground. Modrić became a refugee and, for seven years, lived with his family in the Hotel Kolovare. He later moved to the Hotel Iž in Zadar.
His father, an aeromechanic, joined the Croatian Army. Despite the thousands of bombs that fell on the city during those years, some people used playing football as a way to escape the reality of war. He recalls it as a tough time for his family, something which shaped him as a person. “Mostly unaware” is not parallel to “befriended many other children” and “their parents did not let it affect their childhood.”
