Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake Strikes Banda Sea: NCS Issues Alert

Earthquake: In the early hours of November 11, 2023, the National Center for Seismology delivered a seismic alert, revealing the occurrence of a notable earthquake in the Banda Sea region. The earthquake, registering a magnitude of 6.1, unfolded at precisely 02:15:12 IST. The epicenter was located at a latitude of -6.08 and a longitude of 130.13, with a depth of 10 kilometers.

The Banda Sea, situated in Southeast Asia, has experienced seismic activity in the past, given its location within the Pacific Ring of Fire—a region renowned for its heightened tectonic activity. Earthquakes in this area can be attributed to the complex interactions between several tectonic plates, making it a hotspot for seismic events.

“The recorded depth of 10 kilometers is indicative of a relatively shallow earthquake. Shallow earthquakes, although closer to the surface, can potentially cause more significant shaking and damage to structures due to their proximity to populated areas”.

The National Center for Seismology plays a crucial role in monitoring and disseminating information about seismic events in the region. The prompt announcement of earthquake details, including magnitude, location, and depth, serves as a vital tool for authorities and the public to assess potential risks and take necessary precautions.
