Mallikarjun Kharge Pays Tribute to Oscar Fernandes on His Second Death Anniversary.

Mallikarjun Kharge, President of the Indian National Congress, fondly remembers the contributions of the late Oscar Fernandes, a devoted Congress leader and former Union Minister, on the occasion of his second death anniversary. Oscar Fernandes, who passed away on September 13, 2021, was a stalwart in the Indian National Congress and held key ministerial positions in the UPA government.

In his tribute, Kharge highlighted Oscar Fernandes’ remarkable five-decade-long political career, during which he tirelessly worked towards the social upliftment of rural India. Oscar Fernandes played a pivotal role in conceptualizing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), a landmark initiative for rural development.

Kharge also spoke of Oscar Fernandes’ exceptional qualities, describing him as one of the kindest, most selfless, and most generous political leaders in the country. Their close friendship added a personal touch to Kharge’s tribute.

Dr. Oscar Fernandes, born on March 27, 1941, was not only a seasoned politician but also a trusted confidant of former Congress President Rahul Gandhi. He played a crucial role in the decision-making process within the Congress Party. Additionally, Oscar Fernandes collaborated closely with the late Mogaveera community leader, Mr. Ananda Mendon, to drive social development initiatives in the coastal regions of Karnataka.

Oscar Fernandes held several significant positions during his political career. He served as the Union Cabinet Minister for Transport, Road and Highways, as well as Labour and Employment in the UPA government. He was also the Chairman of the Central Election Authority of the All India Congress Committee and had previously held the role of AICC General Secretary.

Fernandes’ journey in Indian politics began when he was elected to the 7th Lok Sabha in 1980, representing the Udupi constituency in Karnataka. He continued to win re-election in subsequent years—1984, 1989, 1991, and 1996—from the same constituency. Later, he transitioned to the Rajya Sabha, winning elections in 1998 and 2004. During his tenure as Union Minister from 2004 to 2009, he handled various portfolios, including Statistics and Programme Implementation, NRI Affairs, Youth and Sports Affairs, and Labour and Employment. His contributions extended beyond politics, as he served two terms as a member of the Council of the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore.

Furthermore, Oscar Fernandes’ name was notable in the National Herald case, reflecting his presence in various spheres of public life and governance.
