On the occasion of Bhanubhakta Acharya‘s birth anniversary, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, expressed a heartfelt tribute to the revered Nepali poet. Bhanubhakta Acharya, born on July 13, 1814 (29 Ashadh 1871 BS), in Chundi Ramgha, Tanahun District, Nepal, is celebrated as the first poet in the Nepali language. His contributions are monumental, most notably his historic translation of the epic Ramayana from Sanskrit to Nepali. Initially shared orally, his rendition of the Ramayana captivated audiences and was later compiled and published by Motirām Bhatta in the late 19th century as the “Bhanubhakta Ramayana.”

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee highlighted Bhanubhakta Acharya’s enduring legacy, describing him as “Aadikabi,” or “the first poet,” a title bestowed upon him for his pioneering literary achievements. She remarked, “He will always be revered for his outstanding contribution to Nepali literature and society.”

Bhanubhakta Acharya’s early education in Sanskrit, under the guidance of his grandfather and later in Varanasi, laid the foundation for his scholarly pursuits and linguistic prowess. His father, Dhananjaya Acharya, a government official, supported his educational journey, fostering an environment conducive to learning and cultural exploration.
