The earthquakes that hit Syria and Turkiye on February 6, 2023, caused massive destruction, loss of life, and displacement. Responding swiftly to the situation, the Union Health Ministry arranged for 3 truckloads of relief materials, including life-saving emergency medicines and protective items, to be delivered to the affected regions within 12 hours.
The relief materials were handed over to the Indian Air Force (IAF), which departed for Syria with the emergency relief material on the same day. The consignment included critical care equipment, valued at approximately Rs 2 crore. The prompt response of the Ministry was a demonstration of India’s age-old tradition of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which translates to the world being one family.
Subsequently, a larger consignment of relief materials was arranged for both Syria and Turkiye. The consignment for Syria consisted of 72 critical care drugs, consumables, and protective items, valued at Rs 1.4 crore. The relief materials sent for Turkiye included 14 types of medical and critical care equipment, valued at Rs 4 crore.
The efforts of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare have been critical in providing much-needed medical assistance to the affected regions. The relief materials have helped to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the earthquake and provided them with access to life-saving medical supplies.
