Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma commemorated the 8th death anniversary of his father, the late Purno Agitok Sangma, with heartfelt tributes at the Catholic Cemetery. Reflecting on his father’s legacy, CM Sangma expressed profound gratitude for the enduring ideals that continue to inspire and guide the community.
Purno Agitok Sangma, a stalwart in Indian politics, served as the 4th Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 1988 to 1990 and as the 11th Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1996 to 1998. His contributions as a member of the Lok Sabha from Tura, spanning multiple terms, left an indelible mark on the political landscape.
Beyond his political endeavors, Purno Agitok Sangma was instrumental in founding the National People’s Party (NPP) and co-founding the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), shaping the course of Indian politics. His candidacy in the 2012 Indian presidential election, supported by the BJP and AIADMK, showcased his stature as a respected leader.
Although he lost the presidential bid to Congress politician Shri Pranab Mukherjee, Purno Agitok Sangma’s contributions were recognized posthumously with the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, in the field of Public Affairs in 2017. He holds the distinction of being the first recipient of the Padma Vibhushan from Meghalaya, underscoring his significant impact on the state and the nation.
