Delhi: In a landmark event organized by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the contributions of women change-makers in the Swachh Bharat Mission – Grameen (SBM-G) were acknowledged and celebrated. The event, held in New Delhi, went beyond mere celebration, serving as a platform for insightful policy discussions and collaboration to drive progress in the sanitation sector.
The gathering, graced by Union Minister of Jal Shakti, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, and Minister of State, Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar, saw the participation of over 475 women from diverse backgrounds. The discussions aimed to commemorate the achievements of women leaders in sanitation and explore avenues for future policy directions.
Jitendra Srivastava, Joint Secretary & Mission Director of SBM-G, welcomed the participants, praising the women for “being the change they want to see in the world.” He provided updates on the SBM’s progress, highlighting the transition of more villages to the ODF Plus Model category—a testament to the zeal and motivation of women leaders. ODF Plus Model villages sustain their ODF status, emphasizing solid and liquid waste management and visual cleanliness.
Chandra Bhushan Kumar, Additional Secretary & Mission Director of JJM, set the context of the event, emphasizing Nari Sashaktikaran (women empowerment) as women transform into leaders and changemakers across sectors, including SBM-G. He stressed the need to improve waste management systems, learn from different states, and focus on “jan bhagidari for Sampoorn Swachhata” (public participation for total cleanliness).
The event also showcased “Swachhata Shakti: Stories of Women Transforming India’s Sanitation at the grassroots,” paying tribute to the exemplary work of these dedicated women.
During the interactions, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat highlighted the success of SBM, with over 11 crore toilets constructed and villages achieving ODF-plus status. He emphasized the long-term endeavor of SBM-G, urging women changemakers to create a culture of sanitation and community ownership.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar applauded the women champions, recognizing their commitment to cleanliness. He stressed the unity in diversity, with women from various states showcasing unwavering dedication to the mission. Chandrasekhar encouraged technology solutions, collaborative efforts, and community engagement to continue shaping the nation’s sanitation landscape.
The event stood as a testament to women’s pivotal role in driving transformative change in the sanitation sector, embodying the spirit of unity and commitment towards a cleaner India.
