The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) celebrated the International Day for Women in Maritime in New Delhi, highlighting the crucial contributions of women seafarers. This year’s theme, “Safe Horizons: Women in Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety,” emphasizes the importance of safety & security for women in the maritime sector.
During the celebration, 27 women seafarers from various marine institutes and professionals in the field were recognized for their dedication and significant contributions to the maritime industry. These women exemplify the strength and resilience needed to thrive in a traditionally male-dominated field, paving the way for future generations.
The celebration underscored gender equality as a key pillar for a sustainable future, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 5 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda. MoPSW is committed to supporting and empowering women in maritime through initiatives and partnerships with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other stakeholders.
Over the past nine years, the number of seafarers in India has increased by 140%, with active Indian seafarers rising from 117,090 in 2014 to 280,000 in 2023. The number of registered women seafarers has grown by 514% during this period, reflecting significant progress in gender inclusion within the industry.As of May 15, 2024, the count of registered women seafarers stands at 13,371, among whom 4,770 were actively serving as of December 31, 2023.
The event highlighted the critical impact of women on maritime safety and their essential role in ensuring safe operations and protecting lives at sea. MoPSW’s celebration underscores its commitment to fostering a balanced, diverse, and prosperous maritime community.
