The accident transpired around 1 AM when a tractor-trailer carrying 13 labourers was en route to Varanasi. According to Abhinandan Kumar Singh, Superintendent of Police in Mirzapur, the truck lost control and collided with the tractor from behind. Tragically, ten of the labourers died on the spot, while three others sustained critical injuries and were rushed to the Banaras Hindu University Trauma Centre for treatment. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences via social media, calling the incident “extremely painful.” He announced an ex gratia payment of ₹2 lakh to each family of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those injured.
