Modi Mourns The Loss Of Architectural Icon Dr. BV Doshi.

On the 24th of January Modi said, “Dr. BV Doshi Ji was a brilliant architect and a remarkable institution builder. The coming generations will get glimpses of his greatness by admiring his rich work across India. His passing away is saddening. Condolences to his family and admirers”.

Dr. Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi (26 August 1927 – 24 January 2023) is a renowned Indian architect and urban planner, widely considered one of the most important figures in the architecture and design field in India. Born in 1927 in Pune, India, Doshi began his architectural education at the J.J. School of Architecture in Mumbai and later traveled to Europe to study under the likes of Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn.

Doshi’s work is characterized by a deep understanding of traditional Indian architecture and culture, as well as a strong commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. His designs often incorporate elements of Indian vernacular architecture, such as courtyards, verandahs, and shaded outdoor spaces, while also incorporating modern building technologies and materials.

One of Doshi’s most famous projects is the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad, which was completed in 1974. The campus is widely considered a masterpiece of modern architecture and is known for its innovative use of space, light, and landscape. The campus is a great example of how Doshi’s work combines traditional Indian design elements with modern building techniques.

Another notable project is the Aranya Low-Cost Housing in Indore, which was completed in 1989. The project is a large-scale housing development for low-income families and is known for its innovative use of space, light, and ventilation. The project has been widely praised for its ability to provide affordable, high-quality housing in a sustainable and socially responsible way.

Doshi has also been a vocal advocate for the importance of architecture and design in shaping the built environment and has made significant contributions to architectural education in India. He is the founder of the School of Architecture in Ahmedabad and the Vastu-Shilpa Foundation for Environmental Planning and Design.

Doshi has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 2018, which is widely considered the highest honor in architecture. He continues to work and teach, and his influence on the architecture and design field in India and around the world continues to be felt to this day.
