The decision was made during the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) currently being held in India. India had nominated the ‘Moidams’ for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List for the year 2023-24.

The Ahom dynasty ruled Assam for nearly 600 years, from the 13th to the 19th century. The ‘Moidams’ are a testament to their rich cultural heritage and architectural prowess. These mound-burial structures are found in the Charaideo district of Assam and are considered to be the original capital and the first royal necropolis of the Ahom kings.

The inscription of the ‘Moidams’ on the UNESCO World Heritage List is a significant achievement for India and a recognition of the country’s diverse cultural heritage. It is also a testament to the efforts of the Indian government and the people of Assam in preserving and promoting this unique aspect of their history.

The inclusion of the ‘Moidams’ on the World Heritage List will also help in the conservation and protection of this important archaeological site, ensuring that it remains a source of pride and inspiration for generations to come.
