The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reports significant progress in the advance of the Southwest Monsoon, with favorable conditions for its onset over Kerala expected in the next 2-3 days. The Northern Limit of Monsoon currently passes through coordinates 08°N/60°E to 21°N/92.5°E.
The monsoon is set to advance into more parts of the South Arabian Sea, the remaining Maldives and Comorin area, parts of Lakshadweep, Kerala, the Southwest and Central Bay of Bengal, the Northeast Bay of Bengal, and some Northeastern states during the same period.
In the aftermath of Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Remal’, which weakened into a low-pressure area over northeast Assam, the Indian Coast Guard’s proactive measures ensured no loss of life or property. However, the remnants of the storm will continue to affect weather patterns in the region.
Rainfall Forecast:
- Northeast India: Expect widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim for the next seven days. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over these regions in the next five days.
- Eastern India: Scattered light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms over Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, and Odisha is anticipated for the next five days, with gusty winds on May 31 and June 1.
- Southern India: Widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms is forecast for Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands over the next seven days. Kerala and Mahe can expect isolated very heavy rainfall on May 29-30.
Heatwave Conditions:
- Northwest and Central India: A severe heatwave is ongoing in parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, with temperatures exceeding 40°C. Conditions are expected to gradually ease from May 30.
- Other Regions: Isolated heatwave conditions are forecast for Bihar, Jharkhand, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, and Odisha on May 29-30. Hot and humid weather is likely in Gujarat, with warm nights expected in parts of Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi through June 2.
Western Disturbance: A fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect Northwest India from May 30, bringing light rainfall with thunderstorms to Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad. Scattered light rainfall is also expected in the plains of Northwest India from May 30 to June 2.
