Monsoon – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a detailed weather forecast highlighting significant rainfall activity across various regions of India over the next few days. The monsoon trough is currently positioned south of its normal trajectory and is expected to remain so for the next 4-5 days. This will influence weather patterns, leading to widespread rainfall and thunderstorms.
Monsoon: Current Weather Systems:
- Monsoon Trough: Positioned south of its usual location, extending up to lower tropospheric levels.
- Off-shore Trough: Running along the south Gujarat-north Kerala coasts at mean sea level.
- Cyclonic Circulation: Present over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand and Odisha at lower and middle tropospheric levels.
Forecast and Warnings:
West, Central, and South Peninsular India:
- Rainfall: Expect fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Kerala & Mahe, Lakshadweep, Karnataka, Gujarat state, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam. Telangana and Rayalaseema will see scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall, while Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal will experience isolated to scattered rain over the next five days.
- Heavy Rainfall: Anticipated at isolated places in Konkan & Goa, Kerala & Mahe, Coastal & South Interior Karnataka, and in Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat state over the next five days. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is expected over Konkan & Goa, the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra on 15th & 16th of July, Coastal Karnataka, and South Interior Karnataka on the 15th of July, and Kerala & Mahe on the 15th of July.
East & Northeast India:
- Rainfall: Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning expected over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, and Odisha. Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall is likely over Northeast India and Gangetic West Bengal, with isolated to scattered rainfall over Bihar and Jharkhand in the next five days.
- Heavy Rainfall: Predicted at isolated places over Odisha on 15th, 17th, and 18th July, Arunachal Pradesh from 15th to 17th July, Assam & Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Bihar on 15th July, and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura on 15th & 16th July.
Northwest India:
- Rainfall: Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is likely over Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Rajasthan. Isolated to scattered rainfall is expected over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, and East Rajasthan in the next five days.
- Heavy Rainfall: Expected at isolated places over Uttarakhand and East Rajasthan from 15th to 19th July, and over East Uttar Pradesh on 15th & 18th July.
