Monsoon Update: Heavy Rainfall Predicted in Central, West, and Northwest India

Monsoon: The western end of the monsoon trough is active and positioned north of its normal location, while the eastern end runs close to its mean sea level. A cyclonic circulation is observed over Gangetic West Bengal and its neighboring regions at lower tropospheric levels. Additionally, an off-shore trough runs from South Gujarat to the Kerala coast at mean sea level. A shear zone extends roughly along 20°N in lower and middle tropospheric levels, tilting southwards with height. Another cyclonic circulation lies over the north Arabian Sea in lower tropospheric levels, also tilting southwards with height.

Monsoon Forecast and Warnings for West & Central India

Over the next five days, West and Central India can expect fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is predicted for Madhya Maharashtra from August 1st to 3rd, East Madhya Pradesh on August 1st and 2nd, Konkan & Goa on August 2nd and 3rd, and the Gujarat region on August 3rd. Very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Konkan & Goa from August 1st to 5th, Madhya Maharashtra on August 4th and 5th, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh on August 1st and 2nd, and various other regions on specific dates.

Weather Conditions in Northwest India

Northwest India, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu-Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, will experience fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over the next 4-5 days. Very heavy rainfall is expected in Uttarakhand from August 1st to 3rd, and in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh on August 1st. Heavy rainfall is also likely in other areas on specific dates.

Monsoon: Rainfall in South Peninsular and East & Northeast India

South Peninsular India, including Coastal Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Kerala & Mahe, will see fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall. Isolated very heavy rainfall is predicted for Coastal and South Interior Karnataka on August 1st and 2nd. East and Northeast India will experience fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, over the next five days. Very heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places over Assam & Meghalaya and Manipur, Mizoram on August 1st, and heavy rainfall in various other regions on specific dates.
