National Windrush Day 2023: Celebrating the Windrush Generation’s Legacy

On June 22nd, we commemorate National Windrush Day, a significant event in British history that marks the 75th anniversary of the arrival of MV Empire Windrush in the UK. This day serves as a reminder of the invaluable contributions made by the Windrush generation, pioneers who hailed from the Caribbean and played a pivotal role in rebuilding the nation after World War II. Inspirational personalities such as Levi Roots, renowned musician, and celebrity chef, Professor Nira Chamberlain OBE, esteemed mathematician, and Paterson Joseph, celebrated actor and author, share their inspiring stories.

Furthermore, DLUHC has launched an educational resource dedicated to schools, accessible via the National Windrush Monument Website. This resource aims to educate and raise awareness among students about the Windrush generation, ensuring their legacy is preserved for future generations.

Diversity in the NHS Workforce

The Department for Health and Social Care joins the celebration by marking the NHS’s 75th birthday and highlighting the diversity within its workforce. With over 200 nationalities represented, the NHS serves as a testament to the contributions made by the Windrush generation and other communities. A river cruise from Waterloo to Tilbury Docks, involving 100 NHS staff members, will be a memorable event, showcasing the diverse talent that has shaped the healthcare sector.

Ministry of Defence Ceremony

On Armed Forces Day, June 24th, the Ministry of Defence will hold a flag-raising ceremony in Birmingham to honor Windrush veterans. This event serves as a symbol of gratitude for their service and recognizes their significant contributions to the armed forces.
