Birla, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, emerged victorious in his initial foray into electoral politics by winning the assembly elections in 2003. His subsequent victories in 2008 and 2013 solidified his position, with his third win securing a significant margin of nearly 50,000 votes. During his tenure from 2003 to 2008, Birla held the role of Parliamentary Secretary (MoS rank) in the Rajasthan Government.
Transitioning to the national stage, Birla contested and won as the BJP candidate for the Kota constituency, earning a seat in both the 16th and 17th Lok Sabha. His parliamentary contributions include membership in the Standing Committee on Energy and the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment during the 16th Lok Sabha.

The zenith of Om Birla’s political career came on June 19, 2019, when he was elected as the Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha. The unexpected selection surprised many, including MPs from the treasury bench. The motion for his election was moved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Despite the convention for the Deputy Speaker to come from the Opposition benches, the post remained vacant as of March 2021, marking a unique occurrence in the history of the Republic of India.
