On the 19th of January, Nitin Gadkari pays tribute to Maharana Pratap, the brave son of Bharat Mata on his death anniversary.
Maharana Pratap, popularly known as Pratap Singh 1, was a king of Mewar from the Sisodia dynasty who lived from 9 May 1540 to 19 January 1597.
Pratap became a folk hero for his military resistance to the expansionism of the Mughal Empire under Akbar. His guerrilla warfare proved inspirational to later rebels against the Mughals, including Shivaji.
Jaiwanta Bai gave birth to Maharana Pratap, who was fathered by Udai Singh II of Mewar. His younger brothers were Shakti Singh, Vikram Singh, and Jagmal Singh.
Pratap also had 2 stepsisters, Chand Kanwar and Man Kanwar. He married Ajabde Punwar of Bijolia and had 10 other wives. He was survived by 17 sons and 5 daughters, including Amar Singh I. He was a member of the Royal Family of Mewar.
After Udai Singh’s death in 1572, Rani Dheer Bai wanted her son Jagmal to succeed him, but senior courtiers preferred Pratap, as the eldest son, to be their king. The nobles’ desire prevailed.
As Maharana Pratap, the 54th ruler of Mewar in the line of Sisodia Rajputs, Prince Pratap ascended the throne in 1572 following the death of Udai Singh. Jagmal went to Ajmer to join Akbar’s army and in return received the city of Jahazpur as a jagir.
