Swami Ramakrishna Paramhans was born in Kamarpukur, a small village in the Indian state of West Bengal, on February 18, 1836. His given name was Gadadhar Chattopadhyay, and he was the youngest of five children. From a young age, Gadadhar showed an interest in spiritual matters, and he would often retreat to the nearby forest to meditate and contemplate the mysteries of life.
As a young man, Gadadhar was apprenticed to his elder brother Ramkumar, who was a priest at a local temple. It was here that Gadadhar first met his future wife, Sarada Devi, who was a young girl at the time.
