Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, recently announced a series of infrastructure projects in Jammu & Kashmir, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and fostering economic development in the region.
One of the major initiatives unveiled by Minister Nitin Gadkari is the Widening and Strengthening project of the Rafiabad – Kupwara – Chowkibal – Tangdhar – Chamkot section of National Highway-701. With an allocation of Rs. 1404.94 crore, this project aims to transform the 51 km route into 2 lanes with Paved Shoulders, critical for logistics and integral to the development of the tourism sector in North Kashmir near the International Border.
In another significant development, an allocation of Rs. 126.58 crore has been approved for the development, operation, and maintenance of a ropeway from SDA Parking (Near Zabarwan Park) to Shankaracharya Temple. This initiative, spanning 1.05 km in Srinagar district, operates on the Hybrid Annuity Mode, utilizing MonoCable Detachable Gondola (MDG) Technology. It offers a panoramic view of Srinagar city and Dal Lake, providing safe and convenient transportation means while reducing travel time from approximately 30 minutes to about 5 minutes.
Additionally, the Minister announced an allocation of Rs. 562.40 crore for the Upgradation and Strengthening project of the Nashri- Chenani section of National Highway-244. Spanning 39.10 km in districts Udhampur & Ramban, this initiative aims to enhance connectivity to prominent tourist spots like Patnitop, fostering economic development in the region.
These infrastructure projects underscore the government’s commitment to bolstering connectivity, promoting tourism, and facilitating economic growth in Jammu & Kashmir. With improved road networks, enhanced transportation facilities, and sustainable development initiatives, the region is poised to witness significant progress and prosperity in the coming years.
