Nitin Gadkari Pays Tribute to Vishnu Shastri Chiplunkar on His Death Anniversary

Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, extends heartfelt tributes to Vishnu Shastri Chiplunkar on the occasion of his death anniversary. Chiplunkar, a pivotal figure in Marathi literature and education, significantly impacted the development of modern Marathi prose.

Born on May 20, 1850, in Pune to Sanskrit scholar Krishnashastri Chiplunkar, Vishnu Shastri Chiplunkar’s literary journey began with his groundbreaking writings, which revolutionized Marathi prose style. Graduating from Deccan College, Pune, in 1872, Chiplunkar embarked on a career as a schoolteacher, dedicating himself to imparting knowledge and fostering patriotism among his students.

In 1880, Vishnu Shastri Chiplunkar co-founded the influential newspapers Kesari (in Marathi) and Maratha (in English), alongside Gopal Ganesh Agarkar and Bal Gangadhar Tilak. These publications aimed to provide a platform for patriotic discourse and promote a sense of pride in Maharashtra’s cultural heritage. Additionally, Chiplunkar played a crucial role in establishing The New English School in Pune, prioritizing a curriculum aligned with patriotic ideals.

Vishnu Shastri Chiplunkar’s commitment to enriching Marathi literature extended beyond journalism. He founded Kavyetihas Sangraha, a monthly publication dedicated to showcasing Maharashtra’s rich poetry and history. Moreover, his initiatives, such as Aryabhushan Press and Chitrashala Press, aimed to disseminate educational materials and spiritual literature, fostering intellectual growth among Marathi readers.

Tragically, Chiplunkar’s prolific career was cut short when he succumbed to typhoid at the age of 32 in 1882. Nevertheless, his contributions endured, shaping the cultural and literary landscape of Maharashtra for generations to come.

As Nitin Gadkari commemorates Vishnu Shastri Chiplunkar’s legacy, the profound impact of Chiplunkar’s writings and educational endeavors serves as a testament to his enduring influence on Marathi literature and society.
