Om Shivpuri, born in Patiala, started his career by working at Jalandhar Radio Station where Sudha Shivpuri was working at the time.
Afterward, they became a part of National School of Drama, New Delhi, and were instructed by theatre doyen Ebrahim Alkazi. As actors, they joined the newly formed, NSD Repertory Company in 1963 after graduating. Manohar Singh became the first chief of the NSD Repertory Company in 1976, taking over from Om Shivpuri who remained in the position until then.
