To commemorate the flourishing landscape of unicorns and promote collective progress, Shri Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and Textiles, presided over a unicorn roundtable as part of the Startup India Innovation Week.

Unicorn Roundtable Highlights

The roundtable witnessed the participation of 40 unicorns, each sharing invaluable insights from their journey. They delved into their experiences, and the key factors contributing to their growth and identified pivotal areas for further enhancing India’s startup ecosystem. These discussions aimed to position India as a global leader in the startup arena.

Shri Piyush Goyal’s Vision

Shri Piyush Goyal urged the unicorns to unite and establish a unicorn club or association. The primary objective would be to formulate solutions that address the critical issue of access to capital for startups in the country. This visionary move sets the stage for a collaborative effort among unicorn entities to drive positive change within the startup landscape.

Regulatory Streamlining and Access in Tier-2/3 Cities

The conversation led by Shri Piyush Goyal also centered around streamlining regulatory processes to create a more startup-friendly environment. The emphasis extended to increasing access in Tier-2/3 cities, recognizing the untapped potential in these regions. The aim is to democratize opportunities and empower startups beyond metropolitan areas.

DPIIT’s Role in Fostering Innovation

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) played a pivotal role in promoting innovation during the Startup India Innovation Week. From 10th to 18th January 2024, DPIIT facilitated the convergence of startups, entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, and stakeholders. Notable among the initiatives launched was the ‘StartupShala’ – a 3-month accelerator program focusing on sectors like CleanTech.

StartupShala – Accelerating Innovation

StartupShala stands out as Startup India’s Accelerator Program, providing early-stage startups with a platform to access knowledge, networks, funds, and guidance required for scaling up. The program’s sector-specific approach, starting with CleanTech, ensures targeted support for each cohort of 20 handpicked startups.

Empowering the Next Generation

To inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs, five dedicated webinars titled ‘MAARG Mentorship Series for Budding Entrepreneurs’ were organized. Industry leaders and mentors shared insights and lessons on the basics of starting a startup. The webinars were broadcast live on Startup India’s social media handles and the MYBharat portal, amplifying their reach.

Catalyst for Entrepreneurship

The Startup India Innovation Week featured over 75 physical events, serving as a catalyst for entrepreneurship. These events showcased India’s vibrant ecosystem and ignited the dreams of countless aspiring founders. From empowering women entrepreneurs to nurturing incubator champions, the week fostered mentorship, wisdom sharing, and strategic alliances.

Corporate Mentorship and Partnerships

The week introduced one-to-one mentorship programs for startups with corporate giants like HCL, HSBC India, Qualcomm India Private Limited, and TCS Foundation. This initiative involved exclusive guidance in domains such as financial lending, operations, sustainable innovations, and disruptive technology.

Global Perspectives on Innovation

A virtual panel discussion with global partners shed light on the five key pillars of innovation, including incubation, funding, public-private partnership models, market access, and government infrastructure. This discussion aimed to create awareness and foster a global perspective on innovation and sustainability.

Grassroots Impact

Workshops and discussions were not confined to urban centers. A dedicated workshop at the University of Hyderabad, Telangana, and a successful Workshop on Public Procurement showcased the commitment to creating awareness and providing support to startups even in Tier-2/3 cities.
