PM Modi Extends Warm Wishes for Tamil New Year Celebrations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended his heartfelt wishes to all those celebrating Puthandu, also known as Tamil New Year. This auspicious occasion marks the beginning of the Tamil calendar and is cherished by Tamil people across the globe.

Puthandu falls on the first day of the Tamil month Chittirai, typically around April 14th by the Gregorian calendar. It holds significant cultural and religious importance for Tamil communities, symbolizing new beginnings, prosperity, and joy.

On this joyous day, Tamil households resonate with festive fervor as families come together to celebrate. Homes are adorned with decorations, and a special tray adorned with fruits, flowers, and auspicious items is prepared. The family puja altar is lit up as prayers are offered for blessings and prosperity.

A key aspect of Puthandu celebrations is the exchange of greetings. Tamil people warmly wish each other “Puttāṇṭu vāḻttukaḷ!” or “Iṉiya puttāṇṭu nalvāḻttukaḷ!” – conveying heartfelt wishes for a happy new year.

Traditionally, the day is spent with family, sharing meals and joyous moments. Children pay respects to elders, seeking their blessings for a prosperous year ahead. Vegetarian feasts are prepared, symbolizing purity and abundance.

Puthandu is not only celebrated in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry but also observed with great enthusiasm in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius, and Reunion. Additionally, the vibrant Tamil diaspora in countries like Myanmar, South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Australia partake in the festivities, keeping their cultural heritage alive.

As Prime Minister Modi joins in extending his warm wishes for Puthandu, let us embrace the spirit of unity and harmony that this festival embodies. May this Tamil New Year usher in happiness, prosperity, and success for all.
