On the 19th of January PM Modi greeted the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on their Raising Day. Modi said, “They are making commendable efforts to assist people in the most challenging circumstances. Their bravery is admirable. India is making many efforts to strengthen its disaster management apparatus including building disaster-resilient infrastructure”.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is the Apex Body for Disaster Management in India, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is an Indian specialized force constituted under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 (section 44–45) for the purpose of a special response to a threatening disaster situation or disaster. The Chairman of the NDMA is the PM.
The State Government is responsible for managing disasters in India. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is the ‘Nodal Ministry’ in the central government for the management of natural disasters.
The Central Government is responsible for providing aid and assistance to the affected state, including deploying, at the State’s request, of Armed Forces, Central Paramilitary Forces, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and such communication, air, and other assets, as are available and needed when ‘calamities of severe nature’ occur.
The National Disaster Management Authority is in charge of the National Disaster Response Force. Director General is the head of the NDRF. The Director Generals of NDRF are a deputation from Indian police organizations. A three-star officer is a Director General.
“My best wishes to the Bravehearts of the NDRF on the occasion of their Raising Day,” Amit Shah said in a tweet. The exemplary acts of courage and commitment to professional excellence by the NDRF are countless. He said, “I commend them for risking their lives to save others”.
