Know About CSantokhi:-

Chandrikapersad “Chan” Santokhi, born on 3 February 1959, is a Surinamese politician and former police officer who became the 9th president of Suriname in 2020. Santoshi was the sole nominee for president of Suriname after winning the 2020 elections. Santokhi was elected president by acclamation in an uncontested election on 13 July. He took the oath on 16 July.

Santokhi was sworn in as Minister of Justice and Police in September 2005 on behalf of the Progressive Reform Party. He was very strict in enforcing law and order during his period in office, especially when it came to drug trafficking. He earned the nickname sheriff from Dési Bouterse.

The preliminary results of the 2020 Surinamese general election on 26 May 2020 showed that the VHP was the largest party and Chan Santokhi was the most likely candidate to become the ninth President of Suriname. Chan Santokhi announced his candidacy for President of Suriname on 30 May. The VHP nominated Chan Santokhi as their candidate for the Presidency on 29 June.

The coalition nominated Chan Santokhi as President of Suriname and Ronnie Brunswijk as Vice-President of Suriname on 7 July. Santokhi was elected as president by acclamation in an uncontested election on 13 July 2020 after no other candidates were nominated on 8 July.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he was inaugurated on 16 July at the Onafhankelijkheidsplein in Paramaribo in a ceremony without the public. He recited Hindu Sanskrit shloks and mantras in his oath ceremony. Several Christian religious leaders blessed Santokhi’s inauguration.

Santokhi became the first Surinamese president to visit the Netherlands in September 2021, after diplomatic relations between the two countries had cooled down. “The rapprochement is historic,” said Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte.
