Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new integrated terminal building at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair via video conferencing. The state-of-the-art terminal, constructed at a cost of approximately Rs 710 crores, has the capacity to handle around 50 lakh passengers annually. Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the nation’s keen interest in the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, particularly in increasing the passenger handling capacity of Veer Savarkar International Airport. He expressed his desire to witness the joy and happiness among the citizens on this momentous occasion. The demand for a larger capacity airport in response to the growing interest in visiting Andaman was a driving force behind the development of the new terminal building.
Enhancing Airport Facilities and Connectivity
PM Modi emphasized the significant expansion of the airport’s capabilities with the introduction of the new terminal building. He highlighted the increase in the passenger handling capacity from 4,000 to 11,000, along with the provision for parking up to 10 planes simultaneously. The improved infrastructure is expected to attract more flights and tourists, thereby generating additional employment opportunities in the region. A Model of Inclusive Development

PM Modi highlighted the significant strides made in the development of Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the past nine years. The budget allocation for the region has increased substantially, facilitating the execution of various projects. The introduction of essential facilities like piped water connections, universal banking, One Nation One Ration Card, and the establishment of a medical college has improved the quality of life for residents. The Prime Minister also emphasized the government’s efforts in enhancing connectivity through the laying of undersea optical fiber cables, ensuring reliable internet access.
Boosting Tourism and Preserving Heritage
The expansion of facilities at Port Blair, including improved mobile connectivity, health infrastructure, airport facilities, and road networks, has played a significant role in boosting tourism. PM Modi highlighted the doubling of tourist footfall compared to 2014 and the thriving adventure tourism industry. He underscored the coexistence of development and heritage in Andaman, paying homage to the historical significance of the islands, including renaming certain landmarks after freedom fighters. The development of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has become an inspiring example for the youth of the nation.
