Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually dedicated the Sela Tunnel project to the nation, marking a significant milestone in enhancing connectivity in Arunachal Pradesh. Constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) at an altitude of 13,000 feet, the tunnel connects Tezpur, Assam to Tawang in the West Kameng district, at a total cost of Rs 825 crore.
The Sela Tunnel, built across Sela Pass on the Balipara – Chariduar – Tawang Road, promises all-weather connectivity to Tawang, bolstering the preparedness of the Armed Forces and fostering socio-economic development in the border region.
In his address, Prime Minister Modi reiterated the Government’s unwavering commitment to the Northeast’s development. He emphasized the tunnel’s role in providing improved travel convenience for the people of Tawang and highlighted ongoing tunnel projects in the region.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the earlier neglect of border village development, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his focus on national needs over electoral considerations. He pledged to visit the engineering marvel to meet defence personnel in his next term.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Minister of Earth Sciences Kiren Rijiju graced the inauguration ceremony as distinguished guests.
Constructed using the Austrian Tunnelling Method, the Sela Tunnel incorporates top-notch safety features. It holds strategic importance for the country besides offering a faster and more efficient transport route in the region.
The project, initiated with the laying of the foundation stone by Prime Minister Modi on February 09, 2019, and commenced construction on April 01, 2019, has been completed in five years. Overcoming challenges of difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions, the BRO has shown remarkable dedication in developing border areas. In the last three years alone, the BRO has completed 330 infrastructure projects, amounting to Rs 8,737 crore, highlighting its pivotal role in the nation’s progress.
