Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi addressed the conclusion of the year-long celebrations commemorating the 100th birth anniversary of Vipassanā meditation teacher Acharya S N Goenka. Recalling the initiation of the birth centenary celebrations a year ago, PM Modi highlighted the nation’s participation in the ‘Amrit Mahotsav,’ celebrating Goenka’s legacy alongside the ideals of Kalyan Mitra Goenka. As the celebrations culminate, PM Modi emphasized the nation’s rapid progress toward the goals of a developed India, quoting Lord Buddha’s mantra often used by Goenka to underscore the power of unity in meditation.
PM Modi shared personal connections with Goenka, noting multiple meetings in Gujarat and considering himself fortunate to have witnessed Goenka’s wisdom during his final stages. He praised Goenka’s dedication to Vipassana, calling him a living example of ‘One Life, One Mission.’ Goenka’s single-minded focus on spreading the knowledge of Vipassana left an indelible mark on humanity, according to PM Modi.
Highlighting the lost heritage of Vipassana in India, PM Modi credited Goenka for rediscovering and bringing it back after 14 years of penance in Myanmar. He stressed the relevance of Vipassana in today’s world, labeling it a path of self-transformation through self-observation. PM Modi lauded Goenka’s global efforts, making meditation an integral part of life in over 80 countries.
Despite Vipassana originating from India’s ancient traditions, PM noted the fading awareness of its significance in subsequent generations. He praised Goenka and other leaders for reviving the practice, quoting Goenka’s belief that a healthy life is an individual responsibility.
