PM Modi Mourns the Loss of Visionary Ophthalmologist Dr. SS Badrinath

“Deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. SS Badrinath Ji, a visionary, expert in ophthalmology, and founder of Sankara Nethralaya,” PM Modi expressed. “His contributions to eye care and his relentless service to society have left an indelible mark. Sengamedu Srinivasa Badrinath, born on 24th February 1940, embarked on a remarkable journey that culminated in the establishment of Sankara Nethralaya, one of India’s largest charitable eye hospitals. His vision and dedication to providing quality eye care services to the underprivileged earned him accolades and recognition.

“Dr. Badrinath, An elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences received numerous awards throughout his illustrious career. The Padma Bhushan, conferred upon him in 1996, stands as a testament to his outstanding contributions to the field of medicine. Additional honors, including the Padma Shri and the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, further underscored his commitment to excellence in healthcare”.

Dr. Badrinath’s early life was marked by personal challenges, losing both parents during his teens. Yet, fueled by determination and driven by the insurance money from his father’s demise, he pursued his medical studies. Starting his education at the age of 7 due to childhood illness, Dr. Badrinath’s academic journey took him through PS High School, Mylapore, and Sri Ramakrishna Mission High School, Chennai, before completing his collegiate studies at Loyola College between 1955 and 1957.

S. S. Badrinath passed away on 21st November 2023, after battling illness for some time. At the age of 83, he leaves behind a legacy that transcends the medical field, inspiring generations to come. His vision and dedication to compassionate healthcare have left an indelible mark on the landscape of ophthalmology in India. As the nation mourns the loss of this visionary, Dr. Badrinath’s contributions will continue to shine as a beacon of inspiration for the medical community and beyond.
