PM Modi Pays Homage to Savitribai Phule and Rani Velu Nachiyar.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the Jayanti (birth anniversary) of two remarkable women, Savitribai Phule and Rani Velu Nachiyar, by acknowledging their enduring influence on society. In a statement, PM Modi expressed deep admiration for their compassion and courage, emphasizing the invaluable contributions both women made to the nation.

Savitribai Phule, a trailblazer in her own right, holds the distinction of being one of the first female teachers in India. Alongside her husband, Jyotiba Phule, she pioneered social reform in Maharashtra, playing a pivotal role in advancing women’s rights. Recognized as the pioneer of India’s feminist movement, Savitribai tirelessly worked to eradicate discrimination based on caste and gender. The couple’s groundbreaking initiative in 1848 saw the establishment of the first school for girls in Pune, marking a significant milestone in women’s education.

Rani Velu Nachiyar, born on January 3, 1730, and reigning over the Sivaganga estate from 1780 to 1790, etched her name in history as the first Indian queen to wage war against the East India Company. Known as “Veeramangai” or “brave woman” among Tamils, she rallied support from Hyder Ali’s army, feudal lords, the Maruthu Brothers, Dalit commanders, and Thandavarayan Pillai to challenge the colonial power. Rani Velu Nachiyar’s fearless resistance symbolizes a significant chapter in India’s struggle against foreign dominance.

Prime Minister Modi’s tribute underscores the enduring legacy of these two iconic figures. Savitribai Phule’s commitment to education and gender equality, coupled with Rani Velu Nachiyar’s defiance against colonial forces, continue to inspire generations. Their stories serve as a testament to the power of compassion, courage, and the unwavering pursuit of justice. As the nation commemorates their Jayanti, their contributions remain an integral part of India’s historical tapestry.
