Ukkirapandi Muthuramalinga Thevar, commonly known as Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar, holds a prominent place in the history of Tamil Nadu. A three-time elected member of the national Parliamentary Constituency, Thevar’s birth anniversary on October 30 is celebrated annually as Thevar Jayanthi by the Thevar community in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
“The journey of Muthuramalinga Thevar began in Pasumpon, Ramnad District, on October 30, 1908. His early life was marked by the custody of his maternal grandmother, Parvathiammal, in Kallupatti village, owing to familial issues stemming from his father’s decisions following his mother’s passing”.
“Supported by Kuzhanthaisami Pillai, a close family friend, Muthuramalinga Thevar received assistance in his education. His schooling commenced in 1917 at an elementary school run by American missionaries in Kamuthi and continued at Pasumalai High School and Union Christian High School in Madurai. However, his academic pursuits were interrupted by legal battles over inheritance issues related to family property, which he eventually won in 1927”.
The passing of Muthuramalinga Thevar’s father in 1939 marked a significant moment in his life, influencing his subsequent actions and leadership in the political and societal arenas.
