PM Narendra Modi to Inaugurate New Terminal Building at Port Blair Airport on 18th July.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the new integrated terminal building at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair on 18th July at 10:30 AM through a video conferencing ceremony. The inauguration of this state-of-the-art facility, constructed at a cost of approximately Rs 710 crore, is a significant step towards enhancing connectivity infrastructure in the region, particularly for the island Union Territory.

Enhanced Connectivity and Boosted Tourism: Key Features of the New Terminal Building

The new integrated terminal building, spanning a total built-up area of around 40,800 sqm, holds immense potential for enhancing air connectivity in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is designed to handle approximately 50 lakh passengers annually, facilitating smoother travel experiences and accommodating the increasing air traffic to and from Port Blair. Additionally, the construction of an apron, capable of accommodating two Boeing-767-400 and two Airbus-321 types of aircraft, has also been completed at a cost of ₹80 Crore. This expansion allows for the parking of ten aircraft at the airport simultaneously, further improving operational efficiency.

Sustainability and Environmental Considerations Incorporated in the Architectural Design

The architectural design of the new terminal building at Port Blair Airport draws inspiration from nature, featuring a shell-shaped structure that represents the sea and islands. Apart from its aesthetic appeal, the design incorporates several sustainability features to minimize the airport’s ecological impact. The terminal building utilizes a double-insulated roofing system to reduce heat gain, while skylights provide ample natural sunlight, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day. The integration of LED lighting and low-heat gain glazing further contributes to energy conservation.

The new terminal building also incorporates eco-friendly measures such as rainwater catchment in an underground tank and an on-site sewage treatment plant that ensures 100% of treated wastewater is reused for landscaping purposes. Additionally, the terminal features a 500 KW capacity solar power plant, furthering its commitment to minimizing the negative impact on the islands’ environment.
