An interactive seminar will be organized by the Coal Ministry in Mumbai as a side event of the 3rd ETWG Meeting under the G20 Presidency of India, focused on the “Just Transition Roadmap”.
The Ministry of Coal, in collaboration with Coal India Limited (CIL), is set to organize a seminar on the “Just Transition Roadmap” as a side event of the 3rd ETWG (Energy Transition Working Group) meeting under the G20 Presidency of India. This insightful seminar will take place on May 15, 2023, at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai.
The Ministry of Coal actively participates in the ETWG discussions within the G20 framework. The first two meetings of the ETWG were held in Bengaluru in February and in Gandhinagar, Gujarat in April 2023. The 3rd ETWG meeting in Mumbai, scheduled from May 15 to 17, 2023, will continue the deliberations on energy transition-related issues.
The Seminar on Just Transition Roadmap will comprise of two parts: one is the opening session and the other is a panel discussion. Shri Amrit Lal Meena, the esteemed Coal Secretary, will be chairing and moderating both the panel discussion and inaugural sessions. The seminar will include presentations by the World Bank and the Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI) covering different aspects of the Just Transition.
The objective of the seminar is to foster an inclusive dialogue among key stakeholders. Recognizing the need for a balanced approach to sustainability, this seminar will explore strategies and initiatives that ensure a smooth and equitable transition from coal-dependent economies to more sustainable energy sources. The aim is to achieve this transition without compromising the energy security of the nation.
An engaging video showcasing Sustainable & Environment-Friendly Initiatives in the Coal Sector will be featured during the seminar. Furthermore, the seminar will witness the release of a study report on Best Global Practices for Just Transition in the Coal Sector, along with three booklets covering topics such as Bio-reclamation/Plantation, Eco-parks/Mine Tourism, and a G20 Special Edition of MineTech on Just Transition.
The seminar aims to offer a forum for both Indian and international experts to exchange their perspectives, knowledge, and effective approaches concerning the concept of just transition. There will be interactive sessions and panel discussions in which participants will actively contribute, resulting in a rich and diverse exchange of ideas.
By organizing this seminar, the Ministry of Coal aims to advance discussions on the Just Transition Roadmap, drawing from international experiences and incorporating the Indian context. The event will play a crucial role in shaping strategies for a sustainable and inclusive energy transition in the coal sector. It will also reinforce India’s commitment to addressing the challenges and opportunities of energy transition within the G20 framework.
